Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SOME membership, certifications, pathways, and the global community — answered clearly and concisely.

Membership & Routes

What are the different membership routes available?

SOME offers five distinct membership routes to accommodate diverse executive backgrounds: Experiential Route (for senior leaders with 10+ years of experience), Professional Route (for degree holders and certified professionals), Direct Membership / RPL (recognition of prior learning for MBA graduates and experienced executives), Accelerated Route (for holders of SOME certifications like CME®, CEL®, CGE®), and the Pathway Quiz for those unsure which route suits them best. Each route leads to the same prestigious membership tiers.

How do I know which membership tier is right for me?

Your ideal tier depends on your years of executive experience, educational background, and career aspirations. Associate (ASOME) is for early to mid‑career managers. Fellow (FSOME) is the core executive tier for those with 10+ years of leadership. Executive Fellow (EFSOME) recognises C‑suite and board‑level leaders. Distinguished Fellow (DFSOME) is by nomination for outstanding contribution. Platinum (PSOME) is an invitation‑only circle for global influencers, and Eminent Fellow (ESOME) is the highest honorary distinction. Take our Pathway Quiz for personalised guidance.

Can I upgrade my membership tier later?

Yes, absolutely. SOME is designed for career‑long progression. You can apply to move from Associate to Fellow, Fellow to Executive Fellow, and so on as your experience and contributions grow. Each upgrade requires evidence of continued leadership impact and professional development. Our membership advisors can guide you through the process.

Certifications & Credentials

What certifications does SOME offer?

SOME offers five core certifications: CME® (Certified Management Executive), CEL® (Certified Executive Leader), CGE® (Certified Governance Executive), Strategic Leadership Specialist, and Certified Digital Executive. Each certification has tiered levels (Professional, Executive, Administrator, Consultant) to match your career stage. All are globally recognised and peer‑validated.

Do I need to pass an exam to earn a SOME certification?

Not necessarily. SOME uses a portfolio‑based assessment for experienced executives. You demonstrate your leadership impact through real‑world evidence, peer reviews, and a professional dialogue — rather than sitting for a traditional examination. However, some specialist certifications may include scenario‑based assessments. The focus is always on practical, demonstrated competence.

How long does it take to earn a certification?

For experienced executives on the Experiential or Accelerated Routes, certification can be achieved in 2–3 months. For those on the Professional Route, it may take 6–12 months depending on portfolio preparation. The RPL pathway can significantly shorten the timeline by recognising your prior learning and credentials.

Fees & Process

What are the membership and certification fees?

Fees vary by route and tier. For example, the Experiential Route involves an application and portfolio review fee of $250 USD, an interview fee of $150 (if shortlisted), and annual membership from $95 USD. Accelerated Route candidates pay a one‑time assessment fee of $100 USD. Detailed fee structures are available on each route's page. We also offer discounts for applicants from low‑income economies.

How long does the application process take?

After submitting your application and portfolio, our review panel typically responds within 14 working days. If an interview is required, it is scheduled shortly thereafter. The entire process, from application to membership confirmation, usually takes 4–6 weeks, though accelerated pathways can be faster.

Are fees refundable?

Application and assessment fees are generally non‑refundable, as they cover the cost of portfolio review and evaluation. However, if your application is not accepted, you may be eligible for a partial refund or a credit toward a future application. Please refer to the specific route page or contact info@tsome.org for details.

Global Chapters & Network

How many global chapters does SOME have?

SOME has 55+ active chapters across six continents, including major hubs in Lagos, London, New York, Singapore, Dubai, and São Paulo. You can find a full list and connect with your local chapter on our Global Chapters page.

Can I start a new chapter in my city?

Yes! We actively support members who wish to establish new chapters. You need at least 10 interested SOME members in your city, a commitment to host four events per year, and the endorsement of your Regional Director. SOME provides a start‑up toolkit, funding support, and mentorship from established chapter presidents. Express your interest via our Contact page.

Are there virtual events if I can't attend in person?

Absolutely. SOME offers a robust digital platform with virtual peer circles, webinars, and on‑demand leadership content. The annual Global Leadership Summit is also live‑streamed. You can participate fully in the SOME community regardless of your location.
